When fish genes were added to tomatoes in
order to extend their shelf life in supermarkets, the phrase, ‘Frankenstein
Crops’ was first coined. Doubts were raised over the ethics of inserting animal
genes into vegetables, and to many it raised the question of whether the real
purpose of such experiments was to increase the profits of supermarkets.
In America, huge corporations led by
Monsanto, saw an opportunity to control the world’s food supplies. As the Us
Supreme Courts had declared genetic research to be copyright, if the chemical
giant could genetically modify crop seeds that boasted greater crop yields,
improved nutrition, greater resistance to insect attacks, and virtually weed
free produce; then farmers around the world would switch from traditional seeds
to GM - owned and patented by Monsanto..
Monsanto have pedalled the lie, that
there is no difference between natural foods and those that have been
genetically modified. Genetically modified foods are freak mutants created by
artificially inserting the genes of living creatures into grasses and
vegetables.
Their claims that GM Foods have been
unequivocally scientifically proven to be completely safe and, ‘The only
question over the difference between GM Crops and Mother Natures’, is why ask
the question?”
Are blatant and calculated lies.
Not a solitary GM Food has ever been
scientifically endorsed as being safe to produce out side of a laboratory, let
alone to be safe to eat.
It has been observed that obesity in the
USA has increased over the same time-span as GM crops were introduced into the
national diet. In the UK the introduction of genetically modified Soya,
children’s allergic reaction rose by 50% in the first twelve months.
Today 27/05/07 in the UK it was
announced that farm workers were at risk from developing Parkinson’s disease
through the use of pesticides. Could the pollen or dust from crops modified to
contain their own pesticides have the same effect? No one knows because the
tests have never been done.
Could the modified genes be transferred
into human beings who eat these foods. Yes, say the scientists, they can and
they do., and what’s more they could modify human genes in new and terrifying
ways too.
What if the human gene that produces fat
to protect the body from cold, and which switches off when its task is completed
until it is needed again, not only never switched off but went into overdrive? Is
this the real cause of obesity? No one knows, and Monsanto saves a fortune on
proper scientific testing by using us and our families as their lab rats.
However, the biggest threat posed by GM
Foods, which incidentally have never fulfilled any of the hype over increased
yield or nutrition, is its ability to cross the species barrier. It may well,
scientists warn, create new and deadly viruses, and awaken other older viruses
now dormant in our genes.
